CrossFit Open: 13.5 Recap

Last Thursday Josh and I completed our fifth and final workout for the 2013 CrossFit Open. The WOD consisted of:

Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 4 minutes of:

100/75 pound Thruster, 15 reps
15 Chest to bar Pull-ups

If 90 reps (3 rounds) are completed in under 4 minutes, time extends to 8 minutes.

If 180 reps (6 rounds) are completed in under 8 minutes, time extends to 12 minutes.
If 270 reps (9 rounds) are completed in under 12 minutes, time extends to 16 minutes.

Like a lot of the WODs in the Open, this one consisted of an element that I had never successfully completed...the chest to bar pull-up. With a chest to bar pull-up one must physically touch their body (anywhere from your collar bone to your navel) to the pull up bar. It is tough!!! Despite this challenge, I was excited for the workout. Thrusters are my favorite Olympic lifting move in CrossFit so I knew I would at least get a score of 15 even without the pull ups.

When we first got to the box to warm up, my coach Linsey let us know that we could do a reverse grip for the pull ups. This is where each hand is wrapped around the bar in a different direction. This helped SO MUCH and I was able to do a couple one chest to bar pull to get my confidence up.

Before I knew it my heat was up for the WOD. 3-2-1 was counted down and we were off. 65 pounds is heavy for thrusters, but I knocked them out in about 30 seconds. Then came the pull-ups. My adrenaline helped so much and I knocked out 5 relatively quickly, but man those pull-ups take it out of you. I spent the last two minutes completing 5 more. My final score was 25 reps, and I was super happy even though some might think this was low (go look at the people in the top spots haha)! I was excited for another new skill to add to my CF list.
I look like I am in pain...because I was...these things are HARD!

Josh totally crushed the 13.5 with a score of 43.
Josh crushing the thrusters!

The Open was such a great experience for both of us. It made me push myself to try new skills and new weights, and I will definitely do it again next year! Plus we made new friends (always a plus)!!!

Did you have a positive Open experience?

What is your favorite weight lifting move?
