Tone That Tush Tuesdays: Pilates Reformer and The Barre Method

For the past ten days I have been in Texas visiting family, attending my 10 year high school reunion, and celebrating at my cousin's wedding. I am going to do an extensive blog about exercising while on vacation but first I wanted to share my experience trying Barre class.

My Momma has been regularly attending Pilates Reformer and Barre classes for awhile now. During my trip, she wanted me to attend her class with her!

We started with Pilates Reformer which is pilates performed on a machine. The reformer machine allows you to add resistance for strength training and to make the workout more challenging. At first I was skeptical that I was getting a good workout. I am the type that likes to pour sweat and struggle during a workout. However, I know that my weakness is flexibility and I could tell that the reformer helped me to lengthen my muscles while simultaneously strengthening them. Pilates Reformer exercises also help improve posture and strengthen core muscles.

Immediately following Pilates Reformer, we did a Barre Method class. I LOVED this class. The class started with lots of calf raises on your tippy toes. From then on you did everything in the routine on your toes: lunges, squats, and leg raises. Man it burned...but in a good way. You also hold lots of positions while on your toes and my legs shook like I was doing a dance. I could really tell it was working and toning my muscles. The class ended with ab work while using fitness ball. This required coordination and balance and my abs were on fire at the end. Barre class works every muscle, and I can definitely see why Ballet dancers have such beautiful bodies. I loved this workout and will definitely attend some Barre classes here in DC as well as go with my mom in McAllen.

Checkout Studio A: The Pilates Barre in McAllen, Texas if you have a chance. Angie, the instructor and owner, was an excellent teacher and made me feel very comfortable even though it was my first class. And even if you are not in McAllen, Barre and Pilates Reformer are offered all over the country. So checkout one that is close to you. There is actually a Barre studio right by my place here in DC and I plan to try a class their once I finish the marathon (3 more weeks)!

Have you tried Barre or Pilates Reformer?

What did you think?
