Tone That Tush Tuesdays: The Curse of the Sedentary Lifestyle

I am trying to give my blog a bit more direction in the coming months and to post much more regularly. In effort to do this, I am going to post EVERY Tuesday (no matter what) about something that is very important to me...Fitness...and thus Tone That Tush Tuesdays is born.

So for the inaugural TTTT post, I want to talk about ways to break the curse of the sedentary lifestyle.  Now I along with a vast majority have a job that requires me to sit in front of a computer most of the day. Not only that, but most of us are so exhausted from work and the day to day grind that we end up going home and sitting some more. This lack of movement has become disastrous on our health and is in my opinion one of the main causes of the rise in obesity in America. Another scary statistic that I recently read in a Women's Health article is exercise alone might not even help. I for one thought that as a relatively active person outside of work that I was immune to sitting's negative effects. But that is not the case. We are just sitting way TOO much!!!

A lot of people, doctors and fitness experts have different opinions on how to get yourself moving when sitting on the job (just getting up once every hour can help) from setting a timer to remind you to move to standing while talking on the phone. Although I have never tried these (and I will start implementing them in my day), I wanted to share my top 4 ways I keep myself moving while on the job...and these are ones I actually use:

1. Drink Lots of Water....ALL DAY!

People are constantly talking about the health benefits of staying hydrated...it aids in digestion and keeps your skin glowing just to name a few....but it also makes you PEE!!! Having a full bladder makes you get up to go to the bathroom, and thus you are out of your seat, walking to the nearest loo, and therefore not being sedentary. I drink well over 60oz of water a day while I am at work. I am constantly filling up my water bottle (which also requires you to get up out of your seat), constantly drinking, constantly peeing, and therefore constantly moving. Trust me...it works!

2. Run Errands

In my office, we have the luxury of having interns to run random errands for the office. However, I try to always do these small trips myself. So instead of sending them to the Post Office or down the hall, I do it. It keeps me moving and gets me out and about a bit!

3. Visit Your Coworkers

During the afternoon, I usually have some time in my day where I need a break from work. Instead of mindless surfing the internet (which I can do as well), I like to get up and visit coworkers that sit in different parts of the office. This gets me standing and then I also get the benefit of some human interaction and maybe even a little office gossip which is considered healthy too.

4. Have An Afternoon Snack

My afternoon snack is always something that either requires a bit of preparation (microwave popcorn) or is in the fridge (an apple). Either way having an snack not only keeps my metabolism revved up, but it gets me up and off my bum!

I hope these lil tid bits help and for other ideas just google "ways to keep moving while at work". There are tons of suggestions out there, and the important thing is just to find the ones that work for you. By moving more and sitting less, our Tushes will be more Toned (and much happier) everyday!

Happy Tuesday Everyone!!!!
