Eastern Market

I thought it was time I give everyone a little taste of my neighborhood here in DC. Seven Blocks east of the Capitol sits my corner of DC, Eastern Market. This lil gem of a neighborhood is called Eastern Market because it is home to DC's oldest continually operated fresh food market. The Market is open Tuesdays through Sundays. However, the real fun begins on the weekends when numerous vendors bring their wares to sell to the citizens of the District. Since we first moved into our lil apartment, Alycyn and I have loved walking around the Market on the weekends. You never know what treasures you might find.

On this outing, my handsome boyfriend Josh came with me. On our way we stopped to take a picture of these beautiful tulips. Tulips thrive in DC.
After a few shots and a few more steps (my humble abode is only blocks away), we made it to the Market. It was pretty early on a Sunday, but the Market was already hopping. The Crepe Man already had his usual line of hungry patrons, but sadly, our favorite vendor, the Pickle Man, was not there that day. He makes the most amazing pickles and olives, and he is a regular vendor on the weekends. I just recently found his facebook homepage, and he gives updates about when he will be at the Market. Click here for more info: In A Pickle

We wandered a bit further and found some beautiful jewelry. Eastern Market is definitely the perfect place to buy a gift for anyone in your life!

Here is a picture of the actual Market Building. Right before I moved to DC the building was burnt down by a catastrophic fire. A temporary site was built while renovations were being made on the historical structure, and today the original Market is thriving once again. Isn't it beautiful!

One really can find anything at Eastern Market...fresh tomatoes...

...crunchy cucumbers...

...and produce GALORE!!!

Beautiful Asparagus....

...Vintage Purses...

...Is your favorite Jacket missing a button? Never fear...there are buttons a plenty!

There are luxurious scarves...

...and interesting light switch covers....

...and unique artwork. I actually bought my first piece of art at Eastern Market, and it makes me happy everyday!

Eastern Market is always full of people, and it is an excellent spot to grab a yummy beverage from a neighboring restaurant or vendor and people watch.

All that fresh produce and all of the friendly people will definitely get you in the giving mood. So grab a lil gift for someone special....maybe some homemade soap for the clean freak in your life...

...or a lovely Wind Chime for your sweet grandma...

...or a big hat for your sun-conscious Momma-sita!
Eastern Market really has something for everyone, and it is just a fun place to explore on a weekend in DC. So the next time you are in town add this historical spot to your travel itinerary, and make sure to get some Blue Bucks Pancakes from Market Lunch, the indoor restaurant. They are out of this world.
